Carribean Cruise 2022 - Day 5

Today we are in the island of Curacao. It is the largest of the three Dutch Windward Island in the

Caribbean. It's beautiful, with very colorful painted homes and buildings. According to our tour guide, one of the earlier governors didn't like that everything was painted white, and encouraged everyone to paint their home with bright colors. What many didn't know was that he owned the paint business!

The tour was delightful with a great and funny tour guide. Included in

the tour was one of their famous caves, similar to the caves in Jamaica; and a spot with many beautiful flamingos. Another stop was at their famous liqueur brewery. The story behind that was, a long time ago they tried to grow oranges on the island, but because of the type of soil, the inside of the orange was sour and inedible. But some Jews who settled in the island found a way to use the skin to make this famous brew. The island has a large Jewish community. However,

85% of the island are Catholics. The last stop was at the museum. Fascinating. Furniture and household items from over 200 years.

Tonight we skipped the formal dining to eat at the buffet where the theme was Caribbean dishes. In reality it was mostly Jamaican. Our table partners from the formal dining joined us. It was a fun time. The food was not exceptional, but was still better than the formal dining. Oh, I should mention that as usual, I took a long walk into town, and
found the marketplace, where I got more mangoes.
