Asia Journal 5
Today was spent mostly in church with the Paiwan people of the San-Ti-Men village, at their Presbyterian
church. This church was chosen because of how thy combine and integrate the cultures. There were lots of local folk songs; but there were a number of contemporary songs in Chinese and their Paiwan language. The instruments include, piano, violin, djembe drum, and tribal flutes, including the nose flute. Much of the dress was culturally representative of their language groups; yet mixed with torn jeans and European vestments. The art down the center aisle related biblical stories through local/traditional drawings representing their stories. Of interest was a national conference held yesterday with representatives from across the island. The report given during the service emphasized the focus on integrating faith and culture. The church and language group in certainly a leader in this endeavor. In addition to the warm welcome they gave to me and Annie Chi-Yu Chen, my host guide, they invited us to say a word to the congregation. Of course, I was classic Pedrito, which put lots of smiles on their faces. The pastor told me later that my sharing made him think of “Siyahamba!” He should have been at IWS when we danced it from the dining area to the sanctuary for chapel (see my Facebook post from June 23). After church and a lovely lunch (which the church paid for), we visited a bead-making factory and museum
owned by one of the church members. You’ll see her standing by her wedding dress 52 years ago, and her baby basket 67 years ago.
I’m now back safely in Taipei; packed and ready for Hong Kong! Giving God the glory and the praise for such a successful start on this marvelous brief pilgrimage in Asia. And giving praise and thanks to my exceptional host, Wen-chuan and Annie! They are the best!
